Cities is intended as a place to share ideas on the culture of the cities we live in. Articles are written with a focus on environments within cities for people to engage with culture and how these environments could evolve to better serve broader segments of society in meaningful ways.
Cities also looks at the culture of material use and the approach to design found in traditional and contemporary Japanese architecture. After living, studying and working in Japan, I hope I can offer a window into Japanese culture through a deeper understanding of its architecture. While texts on Japanese architecture tend be clouded by mysticism, it is actually just as practical and idiosyncratic as anything we have in the West. It is these imperfections that a make it so human and interesting .
